Personal Watercraft Insurance, PWC Jet Ski Insurance, National Safety Board

Wednesday, Feb. 18th 2015 11:29 AM

Personal watercraft (PWC) are a type of recreational boat that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Manufacturers estimate that about 200,000 PWC are sold each year and that more than 1 million are in current operation. Although the overall number of recreational boating fatalities has been declining in recent years, the number of personal watercraft-related fatalities has been increasing.

PWC are the only type of recreational vessel for which the leading cause of fatalities is not drowning; in PWC fatalities, more persons die from blunt force trauma than from drowning. The National Transportation Safety Board initiated this study to more closely examine fatalities and injury in addition to accident  characteristics associated with PWC accidents.

The study was not designed to estimate how often PWC accidents occur, nor are the results of the study necessarily representative of all PWC accidents. The Safety Board analyzed 814 (one-third) of the 1997 reported accidents and examined all of the data for the 1996 reported accidents, which the Board believes provided a substantial number of accidents to identify the most important safety issues associated with PWC accidents.

The safety issues discussed in the report include (a) protecting PWC riders from injury; (b) PWC operator experience and training; and (c) boating safety standards. The study also addressed the need for recreational boating exposure data. Safety recommendations concerning these issues were made to the manufacturers of PWC, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadrons, BOAT/U.S., the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, the Personal Watercraft Industry Association, and the States and Territories.

Jet Ski Safety Tip Number Four

Sunday, Feb. 8th 2015 6:04 AM

Do not drink and jet. Clearly this tip should be obvious to most anyone, but it is sadly not always the case.  Taking a ride after a few beers may seem like a good idea, at the time. But the possibility of injury just is not worth the risk. Of course, the same rules apply while being a passenger, too. Intoxication for anyone involved is just a distraction.

Personal Watercraft Insurance, Protecting a Home Where the Puffer Fish Roam in Biscayne National Park

Friday, Feb. 6th 2015 6:00 AM

A dispute over the possibility of a no-fishing zone in Biscayne National Park off the coast of Florida has raised contrasts with hunting bans on federal land.

With a plan almost in place to tackle decades of deterioration that has left coral sick and fragile, sea grass stripped clean in places by boats, and the fish population dangerously depleted, one bitter issue remains vexing.

The dispute, on one level, seems simple: Should federal officials ban fishing in 10,522 acres, or 6 percent, of Biscayne National Park, to help replenish the snapper and grouper? Or should they do as the state and the powerful marine industry want and try incremental fixes first, toughening existing rules? Saltwater recreational fishing pumps $7.6 billion a year into Florida’s economy, the largest total in the country.

Jet Ski Safety Tip Number Two

Friday, Jan. 30th 2015 6:41 AM

Make sure to use the vehicle’s safety precautions. For some jet skis, that means a lanyard that is placed around the wrist, attaching you to the handlebars of the watercraft. (Often referred to as a kill cord), the lanyard operates a kill switch when the operator goes overboard, deactivating your ride. Without a kill cord, your jet ski could continue to operate with out you in control, and hurt someone else in the process.
