A vacation on a yacht may conjure up images of billionaires and celebrities, but it’s not just for the rich and famous. Several companies offer seven-day yacht charters for $10,000 or less; most of the boats have multiple bedrooms and are suited for families and groups. Travelers can either hire a captain or sail the vessel themselves.
In Boca Raton, Fla., Yachtico has an inventory of 5,000 yachts in hundreds of destinations worldwide, including the South of France and Cuba’s southern coast, that cost $5,000 or less to charter for a week. A six-bedroom, 46-foot-long catamaran to sail along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia, for example, starts at $4,900; a captain costs an additional $193 a day. Airport transfers are included.

The classic Gekko GTR 22 is the same championship towboat you remember from year’s past, but now it’s got some upgrades that modernize this high performer to bring it up to today’s three event standards.
First the performance. The GTR 22’s reputation precedes it as a legitimate slalom boat. As a former record approved tournament towboat, it has small wakes, ski lockers, a center mounted pylon, and a robust Indmar 330 horsepower engine. The boat is quick to plane, and its tracking performance is exceptional. The GTR 22 is also versatile. This isn’t just a ski boat. The open bow is comfortable and deep and it gives you extra space for both seating and ballast. The hull works great for surfing and recreational wakeboarding. You can throw a sack on either side of the motor box and you’re ready to go. And finally, the GTR 22 doesn’t look like every other boat on the water and that’s something to appreciate. The swim platform is built into the fiberglass for a sleek, flowing design and the tower was custom built to fit the deck with an easy, low-profile folding function. A legacy slalom boat at an incredible price with some worthy upgrades: the GTR 22 is back.

Gekko’s Revo 6.7 is a versatile 22-footer with some unique features that comes in at a low asking price. Most importantly, the Revo 6.7 handles great straight from the factory. The Gekko team put a lot of time into developing a hull that would drive great and throw a solid wake for a variety of watersports.
Gekko chose Indmar for their engines so you’ll be getting solid, reliable performance every time. With sport in mind, the Revo has impressive ballast numbers that will really sink the hull for surfing and riding. 900 pounds of Sub-floor ballast is standard and it’s upgradable to over 2,000 pounds with bags. It also has a built in trim tab to dial in the wake’s attitude. And finally, the Revo 6.7 has a unique look that includes the swim platform in the fiberglass, so the whole boat flows from bow to stern and looks great on the water.

Don’t store a dirty boat. Clean your boat before storing it for the winter. Remove surface dirt with a washcloth or soft sponge. Check with your local marina before using any commercial product or soap on your boat’s exterior. Any “over-the-counter” glass cleaners or vinegar and water solutions are safe to use, as are most vinyl cleaners and protectants.

The number of PWC accidents involving injury varies by State. California reported 385 PWC-related accidents during the 1996 boating season, resulting in 298 injured persons, 8 fatalities, and $508,000 in property damage. Although PWC accounted for 16 percent of the registered vessels and 14 percent of the fatalities in California, they were involved in 45 percent of all recreational boating accidents and 55 percent of the persons injured.
Collisions with another vessel made up the majority of recreational boating accidents (69 percent), and of these collisions, 71 percent involved one PWC colliding with a second.6 Similarly, Florida had 751,153 registered vessels in 1996, 9 percent of which were PWC, yet PWC accounted for 37 percent of the accidents (464 of 1,260), 48 percent of the persons injured (389 of 804), and 7 percent of the fatalities (4 of 59).7
In Minnesota, PWC accounted for 3 percent of the number of boats (23,844 of 758,666), yet they were involved in 29 percent of the accidents (41 of 139), 45 percent of the persons reported as injured (22 of 49), and 17 percent of the fatalities (2 of 12).8 The Safety Board could not determine whether PWC are over-represented when compared to other types of recreational boats or if usage type varies by type of boat because accurate data on usage and exposure time for different types of recreational boats are not available. (Exposure data are discussed further in chapter 2). PWC injury reports taken from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) of the Consumer Product Safety Commission and analyzed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) showed that over a 6-year period, the number of PWC in operation increased nearly three-fold (from 241,500 in 1990 to an estimated 760,000 in 1995), while the number of PWC-related injuries increased four-fold (2,860 in 1990 to an estimated 12,000 in 1995).9
According to the CDC analysis, the rate of PWC-related injuries (injuries per number of PWC) requiring emergency medical treatment was 8.5 times higher than the rate of injuries from motorboats. The Safety Board notes that many PWC accidents analyzed for this study involved injury but no reported property damage. The Board suspects that PWC-related injuries are not reported on boating accident forms but are being treated at local hospital emergency rooms (and are thereby entered in the NEISS data of the CDC).
