Get the Most from Your Water Ski Coach
Keep these three ideas in mind to make sure you get the most out of your water ski coach.
1. Open Your Mind
When working with a coach, it is important to be open to new ideas, even ones that may initially seem to contradict some of your long-held truths. Slalom technique is constantly evolving, and a good coach will be constantly taking skiers down new routes to meet the same goal. Trust is important here.
2. Speak Up
The coach/skier relationship is most effective when it is reciprocal. A coach wants more than a yes man on the end of the rope. Try to convey what you are feeling after trying a certain movement or technique, and try to elaborate beyond “feeling good/feeling bad.” That being said, try to limit your input to the specific element of the technique you and your coach are currently addressing.
3. Post-Session Dissection
When possible, seek any necessary clarification after your set. Depending upon the time constraints of your coach, it is a good idea to have him reiterate what you were discussing on the water. Walking through the paces on dry land can offer great insight into the bigger picture.
